Kaohsiung Travel Guide
Once a tiny fishing village, today Kaohsiung
is the second largest city
in Taiwan with the population of 1.5 million inhabitants and the port
ranking among top ten world ports.
Beautiful natural scenery including picturesque mountains, placid
lakes, lotus ponds and national parks make Kaohsiung a popular
destination for tourists who travel
Taiwan. However, the city can also
boast dynamic commercial and industrial life; a number of universities
make it an educational center of Taiwan and restaurants and night
markets (like Liouho Night Market) offering best samples of Chinese
food (including fresh seafood prepared right after you pick it out of
water) attract gourmets from all over the world.
Kaohsiung International Airport situated only about twenty minutes from
the city center make getting
to Taiwan's "Harbor Capital" easy and
comfortable, and the fastest trains will take you to Taipei in 90
minutes. By the way, Old Kaohsiung Railway Station belongs to the
land's attractions in itself. Numerous underwater
tunnels connect different city districts, but a more common way of
moving around
Taiwan's megapolis is by ferry, boat or by bus. As Kaohsiung
is mostly flat, riding a bike or a scooter will also be a good choice,
too.
Kaohsiung offers many attractions to tourists who travel Taiwan. These
include the Ai (Love) River with the Holy Rosary Cathedral, Kaohsiung
Bridge, numerous open cafes and a beautiful park on its banks. The Love
River is the Thames of Kaohsiung. Different festivals of Taiwan, like
the Lantern festival, take place here every year.
Holy Rosary Cathedral is Taiwan's oldest Catholic church and presents
an interesting example of mixed Gothic and Roman styles.
The Foguangshan Buddhist center with its 40-meter Buddha statue makes
Kaohsiung one of the world's most important Buddhist centers.
Another romantic place in Kaohsiung is the Lotus Lake famous for the
spectacular lotus flowers growing on the lake and the temples
surrounding it including the Spring and Autumn Pavilions as well as the
Dragon and Tiger Pagodas.
Tuntex Sky Tower may be less pragmatic of an attraction, but certainly
not a down-to-earth one. The 85-floor T & C houses not only
residential apartments and a shopping mall, but also a hotel. The
observation deck provides striking views of the city.
Science-conscious tourists who travel Taiwan could also visit the
Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, National Science and Technology Museum,
Kaohsiung Hakka Cultural Museum and Kaohsiung Museum of History...
